Welcoming a new puppy into your home is an exciting time, but along with the cuddles and playtime comes the essential task of potty training. Here are some tips to help you navigate the process of potty training your puppy:
Understanding Puppy Behavior
Puppies seriously have limited bladder control, especially when they are young. We initially set up some pee pads in the bathroom, which we thought was a pretty short walk from his crate in the living room but Milo's short little legs never got him there in time. We eventually built him a little play area using gates so that it was a little more manageable, area-wise. As he got better with bladder control, we expanded the gated area, slowly moved the pee pad closer to the patio door, and eventually he was able to make it to the backyard, where he started learning how to go potty outside. Below is our final configuration....after four different layouts. LOL.

Setting Up for Success
Establish a Routine: Establishing a consistent routine is crucial for successful potty training. We took Milo out first thing in the morning, after meals, after naps, before bedtime, and every 1-2 hours throughout the day. Watch for signs such as sniffing around, circling, squatting, or suddenly becoming restless. These are cues that your puppy may need to go potty.
Reward Good Behavior: Positive reinforcement is key to potty training success. Praise your puppy enthusiastically and offer treats immediately after they eliminate in their designated area. This reinforces the behavior and encourages them to repeat it. We used Zukes Natural Minis because they were soft, small in size, and had a lot of different flavor options. Salmon and lamb were favorites.
Consistency and Patience
No matter how closely you watch your puppy, accidents are going to happen. If you catch your puppy in the act of eliminating where they aren't supposed to, quickly take them to their designated area to finish and then praise and reward them. Thoroughly clean any indoor accidents, avoiding cleaners with ammonia or bleach, as they can attract the puppy back to the same spot.
Final Tips for Success
Stay Positive: Potty training takes time and patience. Celebrate successes and avoid punishing accidents.
Be Patient: Every puppy learns at their own pace. Stay consistent and patient throughout the process.
Seek Professional Help if Needed: If you encounter challenges or your puppy doesn’t seem to be progressing, consult with a professional dog trainer or veterinarian for guidance.
Good luck! You can do it!!
