BACKGROUND

Life Before Milo

When my son was 3 1/2 and my daughter was 1 1/2, they started a new preschool that covered different topics each month, ranging from community helpers to learning about different cultures. Well...you guessed it...there was a Pets Month. For the entire month of May, my son asked me if we could get a dog. He would try to convince me by saying it wasn't much work to get a dog because he could walk it and feed it, and dad could pick up its poo. OMG! These were the exact things that kids always said before their parents got them a dog and then the mom gets stuck doing everything. I wasn't about to be that mom. For the entire Pets Month, I had to field his "Can we get a dog?" question. Luckily, toddlers have a short memory so quick topic changes during our 15 minute drive home made him forget about asking for a dog. Phew. Crisis averted.

Fast forward to the following May when my daughter was able to communicate more. Now BOTH of them were taking turns asking for a dog during Pets Month. I had to come up with something that they wouldn't be able to argue with. Ah ha. I told them we could get a dog...when they could wipe their butts cleanly. There. That should buy me some time. This reason worked the next year, too. Yes!! I was so proud of myself.

When my son went to public school for first grade, there was no more Pets Month so he completely forgot about asking for a dog. My daughter did ask a few times since she was still at that preschool but it was short lived since there wasn't two of them reminding each other about it. Once she got to first grade, I thought I was in the clear. I'd never have to talk about dogs again...ever.

Wrong. I forgot about my third child...my husband. Kidding. Not kidding.
